Requirements for Segment 2 

To enroll in a Michigan Segment 2 Driver Education course, students must:

  • Complete Segment 1 Driver Education
  • Hold their Level 1 License for at least 90 consecutive days (3 months)
  • Complete at least 30 hours of supervised driving practice, including 2 hours of nighttime driving
  • Bring their Level 1 License to class
  • Bring a completed driving log showing the required driving hours

What Students Will Learn

Segment 2 is a 6-hour classroom course that focuses on:

  • Risk awareness and crash prevention
  • Defensive driving techniques
  • Distracted driving
  • Alcohol and drug impairment
  • Road rage and aggressive driving
  • Preparing for the Michigan Driving Skills Test

Important Note

Completion of Segment 2 does not make a student immediately eligible for the Michigan Driving Skills Test. Before taking the test, students must also:

  • Hold a Level 1 License for at least 6 months
  • Complete 50 total hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night
